Frequently asked questions

How do I get Croatian health insurance?
Croatia has a dual system of health insurance. The basic health insurance is provided exclusively by the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance. Supplemental health insurance, such as SUNCE voluntary health insurance will give you access to a higher standard of outpatient medical services.

SUNCE can offer you supplemental health insurance for outpatient health services in our clinics. Click here to learn more about the personalized, high-standard services we provide.

Inpatient treatment requires either basic health insurance from the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance, or a foreign insurance that covers inpatient treatment abroad. Foreign residents from countries that have a bilateral agreement on social security with Croatia can also obtain the right to basic health services via Croatian Institute for Health Insurance.

Croatian Institute for Health Insurance will insure foreign residents

a) with temporary residency, whereby the resident pays for the basic health insurance
b) with permanent residency status.
Do I need to register with a GP or a primary care physician in Croatia?
Primary care in Croatia encompasses general and family medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, emergency care and occupational medicine. To be able to use the primary health care services paid by the basic health insurance, you must register with a primary care physician that has a contract with the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance.

SUNCE clinics are a private health care provider. To use health services provided by SUNCE clinics, you do not need to be registered with a primary care physician.
I am already registered with a local GP. Can I still come to the SUNCE IHC for a medical consultation?
Yes, if you are registered with a local GP, you can come to a SUNCE clinic. You do not need a referral for a visit to a SUNCE specialist.
Do I need to cancel an existing appointment with a SUNCE physician?
We kindly ask our patients to cancel their appointments if they cannot come. Please be aware that other patients in need of medical attention may have to wait if you do not cancel an appointment you cannot make use of.
Are all SUNCE IHC services covered by national and international insurance?
Most private insurances, both national and international, reimburse SUNCE IHC services. Please inquire whether SUNCE has a direct payment agreement with your private insurance.
Could I meet one of the SUNCE IHC physicians before deciding to register with the SUNCE IHC?
Yes, you are welcome to see the clinic and talk to our physicians.
